What is Essentrics?
Essentrics is a dynamic stretching and strengthening fitness workout that helps individuals achieve the goal of a toned, flexible, and balanced body.
The original technique was called Classical Stretch. It was created over 20 years ago by Miranda Esmonde-White, a former ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada. She initially used her technique (the Esmonde Technique) to heal her own chronic back pain. The movements originated from using muscle-elongation principles found in ballet, combined with the healing principles of Thai Chi and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching.
Classical Stretch became popular over the past 14 years, airing on national television in the United States (PBS channel). Thousands of people were experiencing results that no other fitness program could achieve. Miranda began to train many Olympians and high performance athletes. Her daughter, Sahra, did her Master’s thesis on the science behind the technique. She discovered that the eccentric movement, elongating of the muscle while strengthening it, is what created the toned musculature and increased flexibility. This discovery birthed the strengthening program now known as Essentrics.
